Fri.-Sabbath, 12/29-31/23 Devotion

Happy New Year, everyone!

Praise God—it is almost Sunday! In order to help get us ready for church, here is Thomas Watson, from his book, entitled, "The Ten Command-
ments.” . . .

"Faith in Christ is acceptable to God because it is a self-denying grace; it makes a man go out of himself, renounce all self-righteousness, and wholly rely on Christ for justification. It is very humble; it confesses its own indigence [poverty], and lives wholly upon Christ. . . .

"Faith is a grace acceptable to God, because by faith we present a righte-ousness to Him which best pleases Him: we bring the righteousness of Christ into court, which is called 'the righteousness of God,’ (2 Cor 5:21). To bring Christ's righteousness, is to bring Benjamin with us. A believer may say, 'Lord, it is not the righteousness of Adam, or of the angels, but of Christ who is God-Man, that I bring before You.' The Lord cannot but smell a sweet savor in Christ's righteousness."

Thurs., 12/28/23 Devotion (Rev. 19:6b)

Today's encouragement comes from Revelation 19:6b, where we read these words:

"Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!"

Are we not glad that this statement above is true—today? It does not say, "The Lord *will* reign someday”; or, “Christ's reign means that everything goes according to our desires and without a hitch." The sovereign rule of our Messiah—between His resurrection and the great Judgment Day—is a do-minion from the midst of a redeemed church, which (in its militant state) finds itself in a fallen world.

Let us not be too moved by troubles, trials, tribulations, wars and rumors of wars; or by anything else, be it good or bad. Over all these things our triune Lord God Omnipotent reigns.

[Puritan quote of the day: "You have a good God, a good Christ, and a good gospel.” —Obadiah Sedgwick, in, "The Anatomy of Secret Sins"]

Wednesday, December 27, 2023

Wed., 12/27/23 Devotion (Zech. 14:8-9)

Today's encouragement comes from Zechariah 14:8 & 9, where we read these words:

"And in that day it shall be that living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea; in both summer and winter it shall occur. And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be—'The LORD is one,' And His name one.”

This day *has* occurred, as Jesus inaugurated it in His first Advent, and cul-minated it in His resurrection, and the pouring out of His Spirit on His church at Pentecost. Now, the whole earth: east and west, north and south, are all fed by Christ from heaven, as He brokers His blessings through His church on earth.

The “oneness" of God was amplified in Jesus' High Priestly Prayer, of John, ch. 17, (cf. v. 11, for an example). The believing church is made covenantally "one" with the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. For these unspeakable blessings let us give thanks to the Lord.

[Puritan quote of the day: "There is nothing that we do or can do, nothing that angels do or can do for us, that can reconcile us to God; but we are reconcil-ed to God in Christ.” —Jeremiah Burroughs, in, "Gospel Reconciliation"]

Tuesday, December 26, 2023

Tues., 12/26/23 Devotion (2 Chron. 29:5b)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Chronicles 29:5b, where we read these words:

" . . . Sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers, and carry out the rubbish from the holy place."

Chapter 29 of 2 Chronicles gives us in the faithful church a good model for the restoration of the world, following years of apostasy and sin. The doors of the church are to be repaired and opened first; then, the ministers are gather-ed and consecrated to the Lord; and finally, the people come, contribute, and worship (according to God's own design).

But one of the first necessities is the carrying out of the "rubbish from the holy place," (see above). We have the privilege and responsibility of thoroughly ridding the church and her worship of all the man-made clutter that has de-prived the God of heaven of His rightful due, and sinners of a clear view of Jesus. But before we can take the garbage out of the sanctuary, we must be cleansed in our own hearts, through faith in the purifying blood of Christ.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Tell me, saints, is it not a more sweet, comfortable, and delightful thing to look more upon one another's graces than upon one another's infirmities?” —Thomas Brooks, in, "United we Stand"]

Fri.-Sabbath, 12/22-24/23 Devotion

Merry Christmas. everyone!

Here is the devotion. . . .

"And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Aug-ustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

"Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

"Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keep-ing watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood be-fore them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were great-ly afraid. Then the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.'

"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 'Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!'

"So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, 'Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.' And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a man-ger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorify-ing and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them." (Luke 2:1-20)

Thurs., 12/21/23 Devotion (Jn. 11:26b)

Today's encouragement comes from the few words of John 11:26b, where we read this:

" . . . Do you believe this?"

Our Lord Jesus asked this question (above), of Martha, the sister of Lazarus. Christ is asking her if she believes a body of doctrine that He had just taught her—regarding Himself (Jesus), the veracity (power) of faith, and the resur-rection of the dead.

Such is the nature of all good doctrine, and of the churchman's belief in it: when rightly-construed it (good doctrine) always directs the believer to the Person of the God/Man Jesus Christ. The difference between a regenerated Christian and the devil himself, is not that we believe different things about historical facts—but that the true saint's faith resides ultimately in the Person and atoning sacrifice of the Redeemer (Jesus).

[Puritan quote of the day: "A man by faith may come into the presence of God with open mouth and speak all his mind unto God.” —William Bridge, in, "A Lifting Up For the Downcast"]

Wednesday, December 20, 2023

Wed., 12/20/23 Devotion (2 Chron. 24:18a)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Chronicles 24:18a, where we read these words:

"Therefore they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served wooden images and idols . . . "

This text (above) pretty well sums-up the religious life of all professing Chris-tians. So long as we stay close to the Lord, and hence find ourselves in His "house," we are fine, safe, and secure. But just as soon as we abandon the Lord, and leave His "house," we end up worshipping wood, rocks, sticks, dirt, and dung.

What a contrast: on one hand, we have communion with the God who creat-ed all things, and has re-created His church saints into the image of Jesus; and on the other hand, we end up bowing down to things infinitely below us. Let all of us recognize the key and critical importance of staying in God's "house," the holy church of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[Puritan quote of the day: "As there was but one ark to save the world from drowning, so there is but one Jesus to save sinners from damning.” —Thom-as Watson, in, "A Body of Divinity"]

Tuesday, December 19, 2023

Tues., 12/19/23 Devotion (Zech. 6:12b)

Today's encouragement comes from Zechariah 6:12b, where we read these words:

"Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the temple of the LORD."

This OT Messianic prophecy is fulfilled perfectly and exclusively in our Lord Jesus Christ. The Son of God came from heaven, "planted" Himself in the fallen earth, and has spread out over all the globe (through the ex-tension of His church—as she preaches the gospel of grace).

Basically, that exact same pattern is the one for all true churchmen to fol-low today (and in every age): to be grounded (by grace through faith) in Jesus; to be faithful members of His body; and from there to bear much fruit (which is the expansion of His kingdom [church]).

[Puritan quote of the day: "Can Christ forget Himself? We are His fullness, as He is ours.” —Richard Sibbes, in, "The Bruised Reed"]

Monday, December 18, 2023

Mon., 12/18/23 Devotion (2 Chron. 21:20a)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Chronicles 21:20a, where we read these words:

"He [King Jehoram] was thirty-two years old when he became king. He reign-ed in Jerusalem eight years and, to no one’s sorrow, departed [died]."

To me, this is one of the most tragically-comical texts in all the Bible. The vile Judean king Jehoram finally "kicks the bucket," after suffering grievously in his body, because of all his flagrant rebellion against the Lord, and his unre-pented-of sins—and nobody is sad about it. Instead, if anything, the people of Judah are relieved.

Some human beings leave nothing but shame and disgrace behind them, after they depart this life. On the contrary, the memory of the Chriist-loving Christian churchman always brings joy to the saints, and glory to God.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Never think to be kings when you die, and slaves while you live. The crown of glory is for conquerors, not for captives.”
—Thomas Watson, in, "A Body of Divinity"]

Fri.-Sabbath, 12/15-17/23 Devotion

Thank God—it is almost Sunday! In order to help get us ready for church, here is Thomas Watson, from his, "The Happiness of Drawing Near to God” book. . . .

"How we are capable of drawing near to God. . . . By nature we are in opposi-tion to God, (Col. 1:21)—as alienated and enemies. How then can we ap-proach near to God? Answer: It is through a Mediator. Jesus Christ is the screen between us and divine justice. Christ as our High Priest assumes our flesh. Christ's flesh is called a 'veil,' (Heb. 10:20).

"As Moses when his face shone so exceedingly bright put a veil upon it, and then Israel was able to approach near to him and look upon him—so Christ having veiled Himself with our human nature, makes it possible for us to now draw near to God and behold Him."

Thursday, December 14, 2023

Thurs., 12/14/23 Devotion (Jn. 4:22)

Today's encouragement comes from John 4:22, where we find our Lord Jesus saying these words:

"You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews."

This is a very bold and highly politically-incorrect assertion that our blessed Messiah makes here. He is essentially teaching that all who worship false gods (or even misguided concoctions of the true God—[as was the case with the Samaritan woman to whom Jesus spoke these words]) were blind in their devotion, and did not know their deity. Then, Christ has the audacity to affirm that "salvation is of the Jews.” The Redeemer would not come from any other ethnicity—He would be the fulfillment of all God’s promises to His church.

Do we have this kind of supernatural faith-confidence in the Son of God; or are we reduced to saying inane things like, "All roads lead to heaven"? Let us follow our Master's lead; and let us do it with love and grace, as His holy church.

[Puritan quote of the day: "A heartless, drooping, and discouraging life and walk is very unbecoming the gospel of Christ.” —James Durham, in, "The Un-searchable Riches of Christ"]

Tuesday, December 12, 2023

Tues., 12/12/23 Devotion (Jn. 1:14a)

Today's encouragement comes from John 1:14a, where we read these amaz-ing words:

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us . . . “

This word "Flesh" is quite strong. It connotes a sense of the Son of God fully entering into our fallenness and its resulting misery, etc.—yet, of course, with no sin of His own (either original or actual). The glorious fact of the Incarna-tion has *perpetual* power. The still flesh-bound Messiah’s body is in heaven today, but this reality does not mean that He is not *just as* active in His church now (as He was in the days of His bodily earthly sojourn).

Therefore, in this joyous Advent season, let all God’s humble and faithful churchmen remember that The One who "became flesh" for us is *still* with us, (“Immanuel”). He has made His church "bone of His bone," etc., (cf. Eph. 5:30).

[Puritan quote of the day: "The happiness of man consists in communion with God and conformity to Him.” —Richard Sibbes, in, "Glorious Freedom"]

Monday, December 11, 2023

Mon., 12/11/23 Devotion (2 Chron. 12:12)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Chronicles 12:12, which says this:

"When he [King Rehoboam] humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and things also went well in Judah."

It is amazing, what a little (but genuine) humility will do for any one of us. God was about ready to "clean Rehoboam's clock" for his idolatry—but when the prophet came and rebuked him, he (the king) repented. God seems to be practically unable to look on a contrite soul with anything but grace, mercy, and divine pity.

This is the glory of the believing and faithful churched Christian: he or she comes to the Holy God in Christ alone—which is the ultimate expression of sincere humility. No works are trusted in, nor any alleged self-righteousness—but only the righteousness of The Pristine Savior (plus nothing).

[Puritan quote of the day: "Are your sins high as heaven? The mercies of God are above the heavens.” —Isaac Ambrose, in, "The Christian Warrior"]

Fri.-Sabbath, 12/8-10/23 Devotion

Praise God—it is almost Sunday! In order to help us get ready for church, here is Thomas Watson, from his work entitled, "The Lord's Prayer." (He is dealing with the second petition, "Thy Kingdom Come,” here.) . . .

"God is a glorious King. 'Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory,' (Psa. 24:10). God has internal glory: 'The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty,' (Psa. 93:1). Other kings have royal and sumptuous ap-parel to make them appear glorious to beholders, but all their magnificence is borrowed. God is clothed with His own majesty; His own glorious essence is in the place of royal robes, and 'He has girded Himself with strength.' Kings have their guard about them to defend their person, because they are not able to defend themselves; but God needs no guard or assistance from oth-ers. 'He has girded Himself with strength.' His own power is His lifeguard. 'Who in the heaven can be compared to the Lord?’

"Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord?,' (Psa. 89:6). God has a preeminence above all other kings for majesty. 'He has on His vesture a name written, Rex Regum, KING OF KINGS,' (Rev. 19:16). God has the highest throne, the richest crown, the largest dominions, and the longest possession. 'The Lord sits as King forever,' (Psa. 29:10). Though He has many heirs, yet He has no successors. God sets up His throne where no other king does; He rules the will and the affections; His power binds the con-science. Angels serve Him; all the kings of the earth hold their crowns and diadems by immediate permission from this great King. 'By Me kings reign,' (Prov. 8:15). To this Lord Yahweh all kings must give account, and from His tribunal there is no appeal."

Thurs., 12/7/23 Devotion (2 Jn. 10)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 John, v. 10, where we read these words:

"If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him."

These (above) are interesting words from the tender and sensitive "apostle of love," (John). Are not sweet and kind Christian people supposed to listen to anyone? Are we not to be open to everyone's opinion on God and “truth"? Ac-tually, the answer, is, “no." Authentic love rejects error—and it does this, not just for the benefit of the true believer, but also for the sake of the proponent of heresy.

Does our spurning of heretics and heresies mean we do not try to reach these poor lost sinners bound-up in lethal error? No, it does not mean that. Here is the rule we should seek to live by: let us gently inform the proclaimers of works-righteousness that it will be *us*, and not them, that will do the evan-gelizing. If they are willing to hear us, may God graciously work in their hearts!

[Puritan quote of the day: "A great part of the pleasure and delight of the Christian life consists in the observations of Providence.” —John Flavel, in, "The Mystery of Providence"]

Wednesday, December 6, 2023

Wed., 12/6/23 Devotion (2 Chron. 6:18a)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Chronicles 6:18a, where we read these words:

"But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? . . . "

Solomon's question, asked during his long prayer of the dedication of the temple, was fully and finally answered when Jesus Christ came to earth in His Incarnation, (which we celebrate in this Advent Season). Indeed, God *does* dwell with people on earth, even today—in and through the glorious Son of God who is the Head of His church (His dwelling place on earth).

Whatever struggles or difficulties we may be facing today may be much-eas-ed by the faithful reflection of our souls on this blessed truth: that Immanuel is with us, here and now, in Jesus.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Lord, let the magnet of Your Spirit draw my heart upward. Lord, dig the earth out of my heart; teach me how to possess the world, and not love it; how to hold it in my hand, and not let it get into my heart.” —Thomas Watson, in, "The Ten Commandments"]

Tuesday, December 5, 2023

Tues., 12/5/23 Devotion (Lk. 19:5)

Today's encouragement comes from Luke 19:5, where we read these words:

"And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him [Zacchaeus], and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.' "

This is the only place in the Gospel accounts where I can recall that the Son of God actually "looked up” at/to any man. Zacchaeus, the once-proud, swin-dling tax collector, is now humbled, and honored (by Jesus' presence in his heart, and his house).

Zacchaeus' conversion was thorough, beautiful, and remarkable. He was a comprehensively new man. From now on, the former-cheater would always "look up" to the Blessed Savior, and give Him all the glory and honor. May we do the same.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Surely, if the devil knew how much benefit would accrue to the saints through his temptations, he would quit tempting.”
—Thomas Watson, in, "All Things for Good"]

Monday, December 4, 2023

Mon., 12/4/23 Devotion (Lk. 18:1)

Today's encouragement comes from Luke 18:1, where we read these words:

"Then He [Jesus] spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart . . . "

What is it about prayer, that God so earnestly enjoins it on us? Mostly, prayer is designed to keep us in *contact* with God, through Jesus Christ. If all was well with us all the time, we would grow remiss in prayer, and very independent of the Lord. It may well be that our Heavenly Father de-lays answering some of our prayers solely because He wants us still com-ing back to Him.

If we weary in prayer, and give up on it—it is the same thing (practically-speaking) as giving up on our belief in Christ. That is a serious matter. May we keep praying to God, all the while leaving our requests in His ca-pable, sovereign, and holy hands.

[Puritan quote of the day: "A man full of grace has Christ in his heart, and the world under his feet; grace humbles, yet elevates.” —Thomas Wat-son, in his sermon entitled, "The Beauty of Grace"]

Friday, December 1, 2023

Fri.-Sabbath, 12/1-3/23 Devotion

Praise God—Sunday is coming! As we prepare for the Lord's Day, here is some encouragement from Thomas Watson's "A Body of Divinity” book. . . .

"We glorify God, by praising Him. Doxology, or praise, is a God-exalting work. Ps. 50:23: ‘Whoever offers praise glorifies Me.’ The Hebrew word 'Bara,' to create, and 'Barak,' to praise, are [only a] little different, because the end of creation is to praise God. David was called the sweet singer of Israel, and his praising God was called glorifying God. Ps. 86:12: ‘I will praise You, O Lord my God, and I will glorify Your name.’

"Though nothing can add to God’s essential glory, yet praise exalts Him in the eyes of others. When we praise God, we spread His fame and renown, we display the trophies of His excellency. In this manner the angels glorify Him; they are the choristers of heaven, and do trumpet forth His praise. Praising God is one of the highest and purest acts of religion. In prayer we act like men; in praise we act like angels. Believers are called ‘temples of God,’ (1 Cor. 3:16). When our tongues praise, then the organs in God’s spiritual tem-ple are sounding."

Thursday, November 30, 2023

Thurs., 11/30/23 Devotion (Mic. 5:2)

Today's encouragement comes from Micah 5:2, where we read these words:

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting."

Often, God works from and in obscure places. Bethlehem was certainly not Rome, or Babylon, or even Jerusalem. Still, it would be the place where the now-incarnated King of Glory would be born into the fallen world. Bethlehem became the "hinge" between Christ's heavenly past, and His current state as the God-Man Lord of of heaven *and* earth. The humble Baby born in a man-ger now reigns as the King and Head of His church and of all creation.

Are our situations in life down here a bit on the "humble" side? Let us not think that God cannot and will not visit us in our lowly conditions. He delights to do so—and Bethlehem is proof of this.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Those whose hearts follow hard after the Lord have the right hand of God upholding them.” —Jeremiah Burroughs, in, "Gos-pel Worship"]

Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Wed., 11/29/23 Devotion (Mic. 4:5)

Today's encouragement comes from Micah 4:5, where we read these words:

"For all people walk each in the name of his god, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.”

Many idolaters worship their gods with more intentionality and devotion, than some of the professed children of light worship the True God. This will never actually be the case for any churchmen who sincerely love God in Jesus Christ. All people are deeply-religious, and are ardently-devoted to their gods. As those who know the One True God, let us give Him as much glory as we possibly can, by grace.

The “rewards” idolaters receive from their gods are lust, greed, selfishness, misery, and death. Regenerate Christians have their entire prize in the Per-son of Jesus; and we are willing to honor God through Him, trusting that all God’s promises are “Yes,” in Christ, (2 Cor. 1:20a).

[Puritan quote of the day: "If we love God, our hearts ache for the dishonor done to God by wicked men.” —Thomas Watson, in, "All Things For Good"]

Tuesday, November 28, 2023

Tues., 11/28/23 Devotion (Lk. 12:32)

Today's encouragement comes from the lips of our Savior, as these words are found in Luke 12:32:

"Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom."

There are several lovely gems to be gleaned from this one verse. 1) God's churched children need not fear, (because the Lord has given us everything—even a kingdom). 2) Littleness of size is not to be construed as a negative. (To be in God's "little" flock is better than being in the devil's "big" herd, head-ed for the slaughter.) 3) Our Heavenly Father loves Christ’s church from the depths of His divine Being. And 4) The kingdom is among us today, in the mil-itant church, with Jesus as our Sovereign Ruler.

Let us be encouraged and strengthened by these gospel truths today. God is very good to His regenerated, being sanctified, and dear people.

[Puritan quote of the day: "When a gracious soul trades with God, and sends his ship of prayer to heaven, he never fails of having a sweet and rich return.” —Jeremiah Burroughs, in, "Gospel Reconciliation"]

Monday, November 27, 2023

Mon., 11/27/23 Devotion (Lk. 11:37)

Today's encouragement comes from Luke 11:37. There, we read these words:

"And as [Jesus] spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat."

Our Lord Jesus partook of some sumptuous meals during His first advent on earth. The pharisees—though short on humility—were typically long on show (and abundance). What do we learn from Christ's willingness to eat, even with a pharisee? That the gospel is to go to *all* sorts of people—particularly to those who were in the very *worst* spiritual conditions (as was the case with the pharisees).

. . . The dinner conversation turned a bit gnarly, as we see in vv. 39 ff., but even there our Redeemer was doing his guest a favor, by exposing his sin, and directing him to Himself.

[Puritan quote of the day: "So let us seriously and fruitfully consider what ex-cellent times the Lord has set us in, and respond thankfully and obedient-ly." Richard Sibbes, in, "Glorious Freedom"]

Fri.-Sabbath, 11/24-26/23 Devotion

Praise God—it is almost Sunday! We *get* to go back to church! In order to help us prepare for Sabbath worship, here is Thomas Watson, from his, "A Plea for the Godly" book. Here, he explains how much the Father loves the church. . . .

"See how dearly God loves the righteous and how near to His heart they lie. They are more excellent. The word 'excellent' carries affection in it. Things we prize we love. The righteous are God's treasure, (Psalm 135:4); and where His treasure is there is His heart. They are God's delicious garden where He plants the flower of His love. They are the dearly beloved of His soul. They are His darlings. He engraves them upon the palms of His hands that they may be never out of His eye. He rejoices over them with joy and rests in His love.

"It is no ordinary affection that God bears to the righteous. The sun shining upon a burning [magnifying] glass sets on fire only the object that is near the glass. The beams of God's love are more intensely enflamed towards them who are near Him by grace; these have the strength and spirits of His love distilled, He loves them as He loves Christ. Indeed, in one sense, God's love to Christ and believers is not alike, for Christ is loved purely for His own sake but believers are loved for Christ's sake. Yet, in another sense, God the Fath-er loves believers as He loves Christ. It is the same love for the quality, the same for the unchangeableness of it. God will no more cease to love believ-ers than He will to love Christ."

Wednesday, November 22, 2023

Wed., 11/22/23 Devotion (1 Chron. 17:2)

Today's encouragement comes from 1 Chronicles 17:2, where we read these words:

"Then Nathan said to David, 'Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.' "

Sincere, regenerate, God-loving churchmen, those who are saved by grace through faith in Christ alone, are not under law. Instead, they are under grace, (see Rom. 6:14). Therefore, those saints, being filled with the Holy Spirit, are free to do whatever they want to do, because the last thing they will want to do is sin. By grace, everything they desire to do will be in accord with the Tri-une God that they love in and through Jesus Christ. They love this God be-cause He has forgiven them all their sins, and has made them perfectly free.

It does not so much matter to God what we do—so long as it is done in faith for the glory of Christ. Therefore, you who are faithful to Jesus and to your church vows—do what you want. It will only please God. Unbelieving religious people will hate you for your freedom; but you are not beholden to them, but rather to the God who has set you at perfect liberty in His Son.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Now it is only faith that shows a man the end and the issue of all his troubles.” —William Bridge, in, "A Lifting Up for the Down-cast"]

Tuesday, November 21, 2023

Tues., 11/21/23 Devotion (Jas. 3:2a)

Today's encouragement comes from James 3:2a, where we read these words:

"For we all stumble in many things. . . . "

This gentle reminder (above) is helpful for us today (and everyday). First of all, it makes us be more gracious, kind, forgiving, forbearing, and understand-ing toward our fellow sinners; and secondly, it humbles us—so that we do not dare trust in ourselves.

The simple reality is that we are all flawed sinners, fallen in Adam. There is no way we can totally avoid doing “bumbling” and humbling things from time to time. On top of that, it is our very nature to sin. Only the grace of Christ, who provides us His new and perfect nature, allows us to have any success at all. Let us "cut each other a bunch of slack” today—as we realize we are all "in this boat together."

[Puritan quote of the day: "Justification admits of no degrees. No, not in heav-en—you are not more justified there than you are here. You are now as per-fectly justified as ever and as accepted of Christ as ever.” —Jeremiah Bur-roughs, in, "Gospel Remission"]

Mon., 11/20/23 Devotion (Lk. 4:20)

Today's encouragement comes from Luke 4:20, where we read these words:

"Then He [Jesus] closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him."

In this world, the covenantally-unique and special time the people of God col-lectively gaze upon Jesus intently is in church on Sunday—particularly, during the preaching of the sermon. In today's text (above), the Lord Christ is keep-ing the old Sabbath Day. The citizens of Nazareth are doing so, too. They have heard the written Word of God read (by Christ); and now the Messiah is about to expound on it. As He does so, the congregants are totally locked-in on the Redeemer.

This is a good pattern for all of us who would be Christ's followers today. Let *us* "fix our eyes on Jesus," (as per Heb. 12:2a). Then, upon leaving church, let us love and follow the Savior—(rather than to seek to throw Him off the cliff, as the people of Nazareth had hoped to do).

[Puritan quote of the day: "Christ is called grace. He is the grace of God cloth-ed with man's nature.” —Richard Sibbes, in, "Glorious Freedom"]

Fri.-Sabbath, 11/17-19/23 Devotion

Bless God—it is almost Sunday! Here is Thomas Watson, from his great work, "The Art of Divine Contentment.” . . .

"What it is then to learn Christ?

"To learn Christ is to be made like Christ, to have the divine characteristics of His holiness engraven upon our hearts: 'We all with open face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image,' (2 Cor. 3:18). There is a metamorphosis made; a sinner, viewing Christ's image in the mirror of the gospel, is transformed into that image. Never did any man look upon Christ with a spiritual eye, but he went away quite changed.

"A true saint is a divine landscape picture, where all the rare beauties of Christ are lively portrayed and drawn forth. He has the same spirit, the same judgment, the same will, with Jesus Christ."

Thurs., 11/16/23 Devotion (Heb. 11:6a)

Today's encouragement comes from Hebrews 11:6a, where we read these words:

"But without faith it is impossible to please [God] . . . "

These (above) are some of the most cogent words in all the Bible. It is faith—more than anything else—that pleases God. It is by faith that we who in the true church apprehend Christ, salvation, and all the benefits of the covenant of grace. Nothing else can replace faith: not love, not works, not mercy, not kindness, not prayer, and not religious activity and duty.

All of these aforementioned virtues, (love, kindness, etc.) will inevitably flow from a heart endued with true faith in Jesus. But they are not the conduit that brings us to The One (Christ), who saves us. Therefore, today, it matters little how well or badly we are doing at almost anything. All that really matters is this: are we placing *all* our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, or not? If we are, we have nothing to worry about. If not, we have plenty of cause for concern.

[Puritan quote of the day: "The human nature of Christ is yet in being. He still continues, and will continue to all eternity, to be both God and man.” —Jona-than Edwards, in his sermon, "True Saints are Present With the Lord"]

Wednesday, November 15, 2023

Wed., 11/15/23 Devotion (Ps. 149:6)

Today's encouragement comes from Psalm 149:6, where we read these words:

"Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand . . . "

Note how the faithful Christian churchman is at once a worshipper of God, and a soldier fighting under Christ's banner. There is no way to please God without praising Him; and a major reason for our praise is Christ’s defeat of all His enemies—and His allowing us, His church, to share in this triumph. Life in a fallen world necessitates spiritual warfare. While unbelievers “roll over” to the world, the flesh, and the devil—the true saints conquer them all, in Christ.

So, if we are in our glorious Redeemer (and His church) today, then let us go into our daily lives lifting up both thanksgiving to God, and the sword of the Spirit against His foes (and ours).

[Puritan quote of the day: "The Church is a body to whom the whole world is beholden. It should be the joy of the earth, for it is the security of the whole earth.” —Nathaniel Vincent, in, "A Discourse Concerning Love"]

Tuesday, November 14, 2023

Tues., 11/14/23 Devotion (Heb. 9:12)

Today's encouragement comes from Hebrews 9:12, where we read these words:

"Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood [Christ] en-tered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption."

Jesus Christ did not resort to anything short of the shedding of His own pre-cious blood, to procure the atonement (for His elect church) that would per-fectly assuage the righteous wrath of God. Jesus bore all the sin, hell, dam-nation, and torment that the redeemed would have had to shoulder them-selves. Now, because of His finished and perfect work on the behalf of the elect, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, (Rom. 8:1).

Christ's ultimate sacrifice occurred only once—never to be repeated again, (as the inferior sacrifices had to be in the Old Covenant). If we are children of God through faith in and love for our Redeemer Jesus Christ, let us marvel that our Heavenly Father is such a Sovereign of absolute love and grace.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Never wonder, then, or be offended to see so many fall away from God. Few men have choice spirits.” —Jeremiah Bur-roughs, in, "The Excellency of a Gracious Spirit"]

Monday, November 13, 2023

Mon., 11/13/23 Devotion (Heb. 8:12)

Today's encouragement comes from Hebrews 8:12, which says this:

" ' . . . For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’ "

Here, the writer of the book of Hebrews is quoting from the great New Cove-nant passage, from Jer., ch. 31. And what a citation it is! In Christ, God will "be merciful to [our] unrighteousness," and our "sins and lawless deeds [He] will remember no more." These are amazing and wonderful promises, but they only apply to those who trust in Jesus’ bloody sacrificial atonement alone for their salvation.

Let all faithful churched Christians marvel at the fact that God has forgiven the sins of His people. And let this liberty of heart, spirit, and conscience pro-pel us into active lives of love for such a wonderful God.

[Puritan quote of the day: "This is the greatest slavery in the world, for a man to have no acquaintance with that which is contrary to his corrupt disposition.” —Richard Sibbes, in, "Glorious Freedom"]

Fri.-Sabbath, 11/10-12/23 Devotion

Thank God—it is almost Sunday! We get to go back to church! In order to help get us ready for Sabbath worship, here is Thomas Watson, from his book, "The Happiness of Drawing Near to God.” . . .

"Let us think about the excellencies of God. He is the ‘God of glory,’ (Ps. 29:3). He is full of wonderful beauty—in comparison of Whom both angels and men are but as the ‘small dust of the balance.’ He is the ‘God of love,’ (2 Cor. 13:11). God triumphs in acts of mercy. This very much encourages us in our coming to Him Who delights to display the banner of His free grace to sin-ners. . . .

"God is the most sovereign good, the wonder of love; He is ready to shed forth the silver streams of His bounty to us poor creatures. This, if anything, will make us willing to draw near to Him and rest in Him as the center of our happiness."

Thursday, November 9, 2023

Thurs., 11/9/23 Devotion (2 Ki. 22:8)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Kings 22:8, where we read these words:

"Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD.' And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.”

This blessed incident (recorded above) led to the great reformation and re-vival of the Old Covenant church—largely led by the good and faithful King Josiah. The "book" that was "found" was probably a scroll of the Book of Deuteronomy.

When the church discovers (or re-discovers) the Bible—sometimes, very good things happen. And note God's order: the clergyman finds the Scripture. He then passes its goods along to the magistrate (Shaphan), who himself ends up making sure that King Josiah hears it read. Had God's Word not been received with faith and repentance—none of Josiah's marvelous re-forms would have taken place at all.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Let us pray that God will preserve pure ordinances and powerful preaching among us. Idolatry came in at first by the lack of good preaching.” —Thomas Watson, in, "The Ten Commandments"]

Wednesday, November 8, 2023

Wed., 11/8/23 Devotion (Heb. 3:14)

Today's encouragement comes from Hebrews 3:14, where we read these words:

"For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end."

Starting a race is the easy part. Finishing it is the hard part. Many people start off on the Christian path, but do not persevere. What is the key to crossing the finish line? Holding onto Christ, by faith, (or, with "confidence"). Those who are sincerely and really grafted into Jesus will indeed hold out to the end of their lives—but it will only happen by their actually persevering in Christ, His gospel, and His church.

God has given His church priceless means of grace (preaching/sacraments/ prayer). Genuine faith employs all of these, as we make our way to heaven through Christ alone.

[Puritan quote of the day: "He who does not know the evil of sin as fully as he ought cannot hate it as much as he should.” —Nathaniel Vincent, in, "A Dis-course Concerning Love"]

Tuesday, November 7, 2023

Tues., 11/7/23 Devotion (Ps. 138:7a)

Today's encouragement comes from Psalm 138:7a, where we read these words:

"Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me . . . "

We ought to be encouraged by this Holy Spirit-inspired phrase (above). The knowledge and certainty of God's personal "revival” of the faithful church-man’s heart (in this world), is enough to carry us through the difficult times we have to traverse down here. Faith says, "I know deliverance is coming, and I will be very happy when it arrives. Because of this, and in the meantime, I will praise You, God, *now*, even before it shows up."

Are we covenanted churched children of God, who love Jesus Christ? If so, we are guaranteed these two things: one, trouble; and two, revival. Without trouble, we would never properly appreciate revival.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Joseph dreamed of the preferment and honor he would have above his brethren, but dreamed not of being sold into Egypt, nor of his imprisonment there.” —Jeremiah Burroughs, in, "The Excellency of a Gracious Spirit"]

Monday, November 6, 2023

Mon., 11/6/23 Devotion (Ps. 135:6)

Today's encouragement comes from Psalm 135:6, where we read these words:

"Whatever the LORD pleases He does, in heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places."

The truth of this verse (above) cuts both ways, from our experiential point of view. At once, we are glad that our God is strong, and that He is sovereign. But, on the other hand, some of the things He allows to happen do not always please us, (and they even go counter to our explicit and fervent prayers).

But, in the end, we realize that we are better off trusting the Lord in all situa-tions; and that leaving the governance of the church and the world in *His* holy hands is the only way to go. God knows all things—and that, with per-fection. He knows what will most benefit Christ's church. Let us love and praise our King, The One who does *all* things well.

[Puritan quote of the day: "There are two sorts of wicked persons in the world: one sort count it their heaven and happiness to domineer over others. . . . The other sort will sell their liberty, their reason, and everything for even a poor thing, so they may get anything that they value in the world.” —Richard Sibbes, in, "Glorious Freedom"]

Friday, November 3, 2023

Fri.-Sabbath, 11/3-5/23 Devotion

Praise God—Sunday is *almost* here! We get to go back to church! Here is an amazing quote from Martin Luther, in his remarkable book, entitled, "Com-mentary on Galatians," (an all-time favorite book of mine). . . .

"To be brief, all the enemies which did before torment and oppress me, Christ Jesus has brought to nothing: He has spoiled them, and made a show of them openly, triumphing over them by His cross (Col. 2:15), in such sort that they can now rule and reign no more over me, but are constrained to obey me.

"By this we may plainly see that there is nothing here for us to do, only it be-longs to us, to hear that these things have been wrought and done in this sort, and by faith to apprehend the same. Now when I have thus apprehend-ed Christ by faith, and through Him am dead to the law, then I do good works: I love God, I give thanks to Him, I exercise charity towards my neighbors. But this charity or works following, do neither form nor adorn my faith, but my faith forms and adorns charity.

"This is our divinity [doctrine], which seems strange and marvelous, or rather, foolish to carnal reason: namely, that I am not only blind and deaf to the law, yea, delivered and freed from the law, but also wholly dead unto the same."

Thurs., 11/2/23 Devotion (Hos. 8:14a)

Today's encouragement comes from Hosea 8:14a, where we read these words:

"For Israel has forgotten his Maker, and has built temples . . . "

At first glance, this is a strange couplet (above). Israel *forgets* God; and then goes out and *builds temples*. Here, we see the incurable religiosity of all people everywhere. Just because sinners choose to dishonor The True God, this does absolutely nothing to alleviate their insatiable need to worship *some* god, of some sort.

Let us seek to keep in mind that every lost person we talk to today—be they allegedly as "irreligious" as they want to pretend to be—are all about building temples for their false deities. They are every bit as “religious” as we are, if not more so. All of us who are now known by God, and redeemed in Jesus’ blood, were also fully stuck in this same predicament, as well. In Christ’s grace and gospel let us seek the best of lost, idol-worshipping souls.

[Puritan quote of the day: "He that enjoys much of God in this life carries heaven about him. . . . The enjoyment of God's sweet presence here is an earnest [downpayment] of our enjoying Him in heaven.” —Thomas Watson, in, "A Body of Divinity"]

Wednesday, November 1, 2023

Wed., 11/1/23 Devotion (2 Tim. 4:1-2)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Timothy 4:1 & 2a, where Paul wrote this, to the young minister:

"I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the
word! . . . "

God delights in His gospel (word) being preached. He is more concerned that preaching takes place, than if anyone ever believes the message, or not. The preached word inhibits the spread and growth of heresy, (see vv. 3-4); it em-boldens the minister for the endurance of afflictions, (v. 5); and it builds up the saints in their holy faith—all the while calling sinners to Christ.

Pray that your ministers preach the word; and that they do not substitute this precious ordinance with entertainment, religious moralism, and worldly stupid-ity. Pray that they take on the enemies of God; and that they bring you the lovely good news of peace, in Jesus' priceless blood.

[Puritan quote of the day: "God bestows more goodness upon one godly man than upon all the ungodly in the world.” —Jonathan Edwards, in his sermon, "Christians a Chosen Generation"]

Tuesday, October 31, 2023

Tues., 10/31/23 Devotion (2 Ki. 13:23)

Happy Reformation Day—as today we celebrate the 506th anniversary of the start of that great work of God’s Spirit in His church and the world!

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Kings 13:23, where we read these words:

"But the LORD was gracious to them, had compassion on them, and regard-ed them, because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not yet destroy them or cast them from His presence."

This is a wonderful verse (above). The reason the redeemed church is truly secure, and is not subject to the judgment we all deserve, is because of God's covenant with us in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Father beholds the blood of His Son's atonement, and He is satisfied that His righteous wrath against our sin is fully and justly expended (on Christ).

Let us in the church never abuse or take for granted this most-blessed privi-lege. Instead, let us make sure that our hearts are full of love for God—blessing and thanking Him for His kindness and generosity to us (in Christ).

[Puritan quote of the day: "For want of hearts full of love [for God], men have heads full of error.” —Thomas Watson, in, "All Things for Good"]

Monday, October 30, 2023

Mon., 10/30/23 Devotion (2 Tim. 2:1)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Timothy 2:1, where we read these words:

"You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus."

This is a lovely verse. In what are we to be "strong"? The "grace that is in Christ Jesus." What *is* this grace? It is Personal grace—that is more than sufficient to meet all of our specific, everyday and eternal needs. How are we to be "strong" in this grace? By faith in The Person of Christ Jesus. When we believe God, that He will answer our prayers which we offer through Jesus, and that He will help us in our needs—it greatly honors Him.

The thing for us to avoid, is the idea that we need to do something *before* we can be strong in Christ's grace. The truth is that this special strength comes to us as we appropriate to our hearts The Person of the Lord Jesus Himself by faith. Are we weak today? Let us put our faith in Christ.

[Puritan quote of the day: "For from our neglect of prayer comes that dead-ness of spirit, that worldly-mindedness and unaptness to pray, to hear the Word, and to keep the Sabbath.” —John Preston, in his sermon entitled, "The Saint's Daily Exercise"]

Friday, October 27, 2023

Fri.-Sabbath, 10/27-29/23 Devotion

Praise God—it almost Sunday again! We *get* to go back to church. Here is Richard Sibbes, from his, "The Bruised Reed" book. . . .

"What greater unthankfulness can there be than to despise any help that Christ in mercy has provided for us? In the days of His flesh the proud Phari-sees took offense at His familiar conversing with sinful men, though He only did so as a physician to heal their souls. What defenses was Paul driven to make for himself, for his plainness in unfolding the gospel? The more Christ, in Himself and in His servants, shall descend to exalt us, the more we should, with all humility and readiness, entertain that love and magnify the goodness of God, that has put the great work of our salvation, and laid the government, upon so gentle a Savior as will carry Himself so mildly in all things wherein He is to deal between God and us, and us and God. The lower Christ comes down to us, the higher let us lift Him up in our hearts. So will all those do that have ever found the experience of Christ's work in their hearts."

Thursday, October 26, 2023

Thurs., 10/26/23 Devotion (2 Ki. 7:9a)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Kings 7:9a, which says this:

"Then they said to one another, 'We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent. . . . ' "

These words were spoken by four lepers who found great booty in the Syrian army camp, that had been miraculously deserted. They could have kept the wonderful news to themselves, and simply glutted themselves with food and delights—or they could share it with others, who were (like them) starving to death.

So is it the case with the gospel. We churchmen who, by grace, feed on Christ and His goodness every Lord’s Day and even throughout the week, ought to have compassion and concern for those who do not. What do we have to offer them? The Person of Jesus Christ, His atonement, forgiveness, and salvation. We are all by nature spiritual lepers. Our only hope for health and cleansing is the blood of the Son of God.

[Puritan quote of the day: "The people of God are begotten through the edu-cation, instruction, and endeavors of those who were God's people before. Therefore, the church is represented in Scripture as being the mother of its members, (Gal. 4:26).” —Jonathan Edwards, in his sermon, "Christians a Chosen Generation"]

Wednesday, October 25, 2023

Wed., 10/25/23 Devotion (2 Ki. 6:33b)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Kings 6:33b, where we read these words:

" . . . the king [of Israel] said, 'Surely this calamity is from the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?' "

The irony is that the first thing the king of Israel said (above) was essentially true. God does send “calamity” on sinners—but always for their ultimate good, to turn them to Christ. The second part of his speech is where the problem comes in. . . .

When we are pressed with troubles or calamities, even if they are “from the LORD”—our best attitude is one of patience, not impatience. Let us remem-ber that we are the problem, not God; and let us humble ourselves, and find all our relief in our Lord Jesus Christ, the One who has “borne our griefs and carried our sorrows,” (Isa. 53:4).

[Puritan quote of the day: "Oh, do not let the devil be your master, nor the world your god. Do not let sin cheat and impose upon you with its false and counterfeit delights.” —Timothy Rogers, in, "Trouble of Mind and the Disease of Melancholy”]

Monday, October 23, 2023

Mon., 10/23/23 Devotion (Ps. 116:1)

Today's encouragement comes from Psalm 116:1, where we read these words:

"I love the LORD, because He has heard my voice and my supplications."

Among many other reasons, here is an eminent one for us to wholeheartedly *love* God: He hears the prayers of His true, suffering, “poor” church saints. The psalmist had been struggling mightily, but God delivered him from all his distress.

This fallen world is a dangerous place, filled with a lot of spiritual traps, snares, false gospels, and false hopes. Even the true people of God are tempted to imbibe of them. When, by grace, we find ourselves desperate, and at the “ends” of our “ropes,” let us cry out to God through our faith in Jesus Christ, and receive His kind, miraculous, and liberating mercy.

[Puritan quote of the day: "Although to true religion there must indeed be something else besides affection, yet true religion consists so much in the af-fections that there can be no true religion without them.” —Jonathan Ed-wards, in, "A Treatise Concerning the Religious Affections"]

Friday, October 20, 2023

Fri.-Sabbath, 10/20-22/23 Devotion

Thank God—Sunday is almost here! As we prepare for the Lord's Day, here is some encouragement from Thomas Watson’s, "A Body of Divinity” book.

"Though nothing can add to God’s essential glory, yet praise exalts Him in the eyes of others. When we praise God, we spread His fame and renown; we display the trophies of His excellency. In this manner the angels glorify Him; they are the choristers of heaven, and do trumpet forth His praise.

"Praising God is one of the highest and purest acts of religion. In prayer we act like men; in praise we act like angels. Believers are called ‘temples of God,’ (1 Cor. 3:16). When our tongues praise, then the organs in God’s spirit-ual temple are sounding."

Thursday, October 19, 2023

Thurs., 10/19/23 Devotion (2 Thess. 1:3a)

Today's encouragement comes from 2 Thessalonians 1:3a, where we read these words:

"We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly . . . "

We do not usually think of faith as "growing." What does this mean? It refers to the fact that saving faith, which is a gift of God in regeneration, begins to be applied to more and more situations and circumstances of life. Instead of solely touching on salvation—growing faith begins to impress itself on other (and vast) tracts of everyday experiences.

Therefore, what is it that we have to face today? Whatever that is, it is to be subject to our faith in Jesus—the same miraculous faith God gave us when He joined us to our Savior in His church. Faith in Christ is to swallow-up all of our problems. Remember: faith alone pleases God, (cf. Heb. 11:6).

[Puritan quote of the day: "A believing soul dares venture his name, his es-tate, his life, yea, his eternal life on God. He dares to put them all into His hands.” —Jeremiah Burroughs, in, "Gospel Remission"]
